SOFTWARE:
Bryce 3D 3.1, Corel Photo-Paint 8, Julia Set Explorer RENDER TIME: A few minutes (1024x768, 300MHz PII) DESCRIPTION: This piece is unfinished, but is included here as an example of a technique that has been discussed recently on the KPT discussion list (hosted by Metacreations, the makers of Bryce). The technique uses fractal images imported into the terrain editor in Bryce, resulting in landscapes whose contours are determined by the light and dark areas of the fractal. The fractal is then imported again, this time as a colored texture for the terrain. While it is true that any image can be used this way, fractals have an intricacy of both form and color which seems especially suited to the task. My thanks to Sharon Webb and Steven Lareau for their inspiring work in this area. If you are interested in trying something like this, you might also try it using some of the textures in the Texture Gallery. They produce fantastic land shapes and colors, as you'll see in upcoming images. This scene uses a fractal that I made a few years ago. To see the original fractal, click here. Eventually this will be a fantasy scene. TECHNICAL: The scene is composed of one terrain, a fractal image, and some water. ABOUT THE RENDERING: The original rendering was made at 1024x768 (72 dpi), then resampled and converted in Corel PhotoPaint 8 to produce the smaller 640x480 and 800x600 JPG versions. |
